abstract layers painting
Chi
acrylic on canvas
30" x 30"

Chi (pronounced: 'kai) is the 22nd letter of the Greek alphabet and takes the form of an X. This painting was an ambitious project of layering with multiple masks and insertion of a variety of middle layers. It is one of my most detailed and complex abstract paintings of created space to date. New areas that are more specific in reference to my landscape works have entered here and lend a different feel. A more rigorous editing of my calligraphic characters with new (for me) paints - micaceous iron oxide and iridescent bright gold - add sparkle and contrast to these curious floating symbols that refer to human, extraterrestrial, or divine writing without being actual or historic messages. Viewing contemplatively, the forms become dynamic and feel as in motion... or is it the viewer whose consciousness moves in and through the layers of forms?
