The Aperture Series:
Ten mixed-media prints on Canson watercolor paper.
A sequence of mixed-media monoprints. The titles are borrowed from the standard f/stop number-sequence of photography lenses. Each print begins with either a geometric or gestural first layer using watercolor or colored pencil. The paper is then laid onto an ink plate and pressed by hand or drawn onto with pencil, creating an unpredictable yet highly textured surface. These three layers of printing with black, brown, and gold inks will also partially obscure the background. In this quick and blind process, I create a structure for which chance and happy accident are allowed to happen. This work reflects the Genesis account of Creation. God uses a layering process, each “day” adding complexity to the cosmos, which emerges by a Word from the blankness of nothingness.
Rather than use descriptive titles which might restrict a viewer’s interpretation, the Aperture Series comes from a camera’s lens, a number scale familiar to photographers.
The series of 10 prints is shown here as it was originally complete for the April 2019 "Paper and Wood" show. Note that only some prints are still available for sale.
