Structure and improvisation, sometimes labeled as antithetical, are really important to make things hang together. It is how I approach composition in paintings and I think it is how the great music of jazz is created. There is a chart and a form, a theme that gets played and improvised by musicians and a procession of instruments. Can you hear it in this painting?
